Clinical Psychology Service for Children with Disabilities

ESCAN

This service is part of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, and is based within the integrated Ealing Service for Children with Additional Needs (ESCAN) at Carmelita House.

The Child Clinical Psychology Service provides psychological assessment and intervention for children and young people with disabilities and their families where there are concerns about emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties, including challenging behaviours, mental health difficulties and social/family difficulties. The Clinical Psychologists also contribute to the multidisciplinary assessment of children's developmental needs and social communication difficulties. They work closely with the Paediatricians and other members of ESCAN, and provide consultation and advice to schools, short break services, and other professionals with regard to the behavioural and emotional needs of children who are referred to the Service.

Mode of referral

Referrals to the Service are made by the Consultant Community Paediatricians in the Child Development Team, and occasionally by Social Services. In addition, there are clinical psychologists employed by Belvue, Castlebar, Springhallow and Mandeville Special Schools where the child/family can be referred by the Head Teacher. The family will be notified by letter when a referral for their child is received and the expected wait time for an appointment. When an appointment is offered the Psychologist will invite all family members to meet with him/her at the clinic to discuss their concerns and ways in which s/he can help. These may be for the whole family, or for the child or parent(s) alone, depending on what is needed.
