What's been happening? Minimize

It’s definitely time for another P.E.S.T.S. blog. So much has happened since my last update and the time has simply run away. As a previous blogging attempt has again been swallowed by the world wide web and, for all I know, has possibly reappeared on some unsuspecting office manager’s screen in Australia I have learnt my lesson and will now write the text AND SAVE IT on my computer first. It will also save Nick his attempts at finding text that I was so sure I had written and saved on the website.

But back to events at P.E.S.T.S: Since my last blog was in March I don’t quite know where to start. The summer term is well and truly under way. Another Makaton course brought some new faces to our group and enabled some old ones to work on different ways to communicate with their child. It is always an incredible joy to see a child sign his name or for a drink or a biscuit the first time!

We have noticed over the last year a growing number of school- or nursery-aged children who are, for one reason or another, not in any setting yet. We therefore have more older children now coming to the sessions and try to support them during that long wait for a suitable school placement. They as much as everyone else is enjoying the wonderful garden Heller House offers.

Our swim trip to Gurnell Leisure Centre was as popular as every year and the kids had a fantastic time. It’s always a good sign when the crying starts simply because nobody wants to leave the pool at the end of the session. Our summer party will take place on the 10th August this year at Enterprise Lodge. Please look at our website www.pests-ealing.org.uk for details.

Unfortunately we had some bad news, too. I have so far failed to find funding for more sibling workshops, both the Ealing Small Grant scheme and Children-In-Need turned down our applications. It seems in the current climate of budget cuts and savings everywhere siblings / young carers are not seen as a priority for funders. I still think they should be and quite a few of our new families brought up the sibling issue as one of their big concerns, so my search for funding will continue. Hopefully I will have better news on this soon.

I will add photos to this blog to show how our enjoyment of finally being able to enjoy the garden again. Hope to write again soon! All the best until then!
