Some things you read just stop you in your tracks. So you start reading some more.
For instance, men with a learning disability die 13 years sooner and women with a learning disability die 20 years sooner than people without learning disabilities. These statistics were extracted from the CIPOLD project at the University of Bristol published in March 2013. I couldn't find any more up to date statistics however ss part of my work with the Power Group I know that in Ealing the council are contributing to a Mortality Review (LeDeR) programme which is again being co-ordinated at Bristol. I hadn't quite understood the background as to why the LeDer programme was so important until I found this accessible presentation on YouTube, which is well worth watching.
Health is a constant struggle for many people with learning disabilities and whilst the idea of a Mortality Review sounds ,well, morbid, I think it is important for us all to understand why this is happening and what can be done to change this.
